With over 25 years in the food and fresh produce packaging sector, AGQPE has built a reputation in South Africa for supplying complete packaging systems rather than machinery alone. Owned and led by Amotz Golan, the company operates across machinery, packaging materials and technical support, offering customers an integrated approach that prioritises reliability, flexibility and long-term performance. ‘Our customers require a solution that works reliably from day one,’ says Amotz.
While machinery is an important component, machines are not the company’s core focus. ‘A tray sealer needs to work. It must be easy to operate, easy to learn and reliable. For us, machines are complementary to the packaging solutions we supply,’ Amotz explains. This philosophy has shaped AGQPE’s partnerships, including its collaboration with Taiwanese manufacturer Y-FANG, whose tray sealing and filling equipment offers high-quality performance at a competitive price point.
AGQPE also imports a wide range of food-grade packaging materials, enabling customers to source everything from a single supplier. This includes CPET containers from Denmark, lidding films from the UK and Italy, aluminium trays from Italian manufacturers and selected paper-based, compostable and biodegradable formats from Europe and Asia. AGQPE’s suppliers are openly listed and customers are encouraged to understand exactly what they are buying.
Rather than holding large volumes of local stock, AGQPE operates on a minimum order, direct-import model, typically supplying pallet or container quantities. While not suited to all buyers, this approach allows the company to remain lean, competitive and highly focused on customers requiring tailored solutions or consistent long-term supply.
This model has proven effective for clients seeking turnkey packaging projects. One example is Efoods in Zimbabwe, where AGQPE supplied the full packaging ecosystem, including tray sealers, containers, films and fillers, and continues to support the operation as it expands. Several South African customers have also returned to purchase additional machines, reflecting confidence in both the equipment and after-sales support.
Amotz takes a pragmatic approach to sustainability, noting that while compostable and biodegradable packaging attracts attention, adoption in South Africa remains limited due to cost and functional constraints. ‘The jump from polystyrene to paper or compostable materials is still significant in terms of price, and performance can be an issue for storage and transport,’ he says. Uptake is currently strongest among niche caterers rather than large-scale fresh produce suppliers.
Shelf-life extension remains a consistent area of demand for AGQPE. The company supports modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), retortable solutions and CPET materials designed for chilled and frozen applications. Amotz also points to a growing move to frozen products: ‘Our customer, FrozenForYou (FFY), has been packing its frozen meals in our CPET trays for years. We also welcome enquiries from start-ups and SME producers looking for reliable packaging solutions,’ he adds.
AGQPE’s strength lies in balancing premium European packaging with cost-effective Asian alternatives, giving customers options across different price points without compromising on food safety or performance. Supported by experienced technicians in Johannesburg and Cape Town, the company remains a flexible, solutions-focused partner for fresh produce and food manufacturers.
