Taming the static beast: how StatAir is electrifying packaging control

In the world of print and packaging where speed, precision and efficiency reign supreme, static electricity can be a silent saboteur, causing chaos on the production line. From misaligned labels to jams in printing presses, static build-up is often the invisible culprit that leads to costly downtime and product defects. Yet, many manufacturers remain unaware of its insidious impact or, worse, underestimate its potential to wreak havoc.

‘Most people don’t realise the role static plays in production issues until it’s already caused expensive problems,’ comments Ross Orwin, owner of StatAir Solutions, a South African distributor of Meech static control products. ‘In many cases, manufacturers don’t even know static is there, but it’s quietly affecting the efficiency of their entire process.’

Static electricity in a production environment is more than just an occasional nuisance, it can lead to significant issues such as material misbehaviour, product contamination and machine malfunctions. In industries like packaging, plastics and print, static often manifests in the form of dust attraction, sticking labels and double-feeding in printing equipment.

‘One of the biggest myths we encounter is that if you operate in a cleanroom or highly controlled environment, you won’t have static issues. That’s simply not true,’ explains Ross. ‘Even in the cleanest environments, you still have people and machinery generating static, and ignoring that can result in lost productivity.’

Static can cause materials like plastics to stick together, making them difficult to handle or feed through machines, ultimately slowing down production and increasing waste. In some cases, products can become contaminated with dust and other particles, compromising quality.

However, not all static is bad. Ross points out that static can also be used advantageously in production. ‘We actually use static to improve material flow in some processes. For example, when manufacturing multilayered plastic bags, we can create temporary static bonds to hold materials together until they’re ready to be processed. Then we neutralise the static at the end of the line.’

Debunking static myths

One of the most pervasive myths in the industry is that static is only a concern for high-speed or large-scale operations. In reality, even small-scale operations can suffer from static-related issues.

‘We often hear manufacturers say they don’t have a static problem because they’re not seeing major defects or downtime,’ Ross remarks. ‘However, when we dig a little deeper and ask about their rejection rates or how often they stop machines, it turns out static is causing more downtime than they realise. Operators on the floor notice these issues, but managers might not be aware of the full scope.’

Another misconception is that static problems can’t be solved without a major equipment overhaul. In reality, static control solutions can be as simple as adding a static eliminator bar or ionising system to an existing set-up. ‘It’s not always about reinventing the wheel,’ he adds. ‘Often, it’s about applying the right tools to control static where it matters most.’

Meech Hyperion advantage

Ross points out that StatAir Solutions is at the forefront of static control in South Africa, thanks to its partnership with Meech, a global leader in industrial static control. Meech’s Hyperion range, distributed by StatAir, offers cutting-edge solutions designed to eliminate or neutralise static in production environments.

The Hyperion 971 IPS bar, for example, is an ionizing bar that neutralises static charges on materials as they move through the production process. This high-performance bar is ideal for applications in plastics, converting, packaging and printing, ensuring that static is kept in check at every stage.

‘Hyperion bars are game changers for our customers,’ notes Ross. ‘They’re reliable, energy-efficient and easy to install – typically utilising the existing 24V power supply from the customer’s machine. Whether dealing with high-speed printing presses or complex plastic converting systems, Hyperion bars can dramatically reduce downtime and boost productivity. Additionally, the bars can be programmed with the Meech BarMaster, allowing us to customise their set-up to meet specific requirements.’

In addition to static control, StatAir Solutions provides air efficiency technologies, which can complement static control efforts. By utilising compressed air, air nozzles and air curtains, StatAir’s solutions reduce energy consumption while improving performance on production lines. These air solutions are particularly effective in tasks like cooling, drying and even rejecting defective products off the line. ‘For instance, in some applications where products don’t meet quality standards, a blast of air can push the rejected item off the conveyor belt without needing manual intervention,’ he explains.

By proactively addressing static, companies can avoid costly downtime, reduce waste and improve product quality.

‘It’s about future-proofing production,’ Ross states. ‘The reality is static will always be present in manufacturing environments, but with the right solutions, companies can control it – and even use it to their advantage.’

Whether it’s eliminating static to prevent contamination or harnessing it to enhance material flow, StatAir Solutions and Meech’s range are essential tools for any modern production facility looking to stay competitive in today’s fast-paced industrial landscape.

Ed’s note: Meech is distributed and represented in South Africa by StatAir Solutions and Ipex Machinery.
