With rising energy costs and growing pressure to operate sustainably, injection moulders are looking closely at every piece of equipment on the shop floor. Temperature control systems – often overlooked – are proving to be one of the most effective levers for reducing energy consumption while maintaining consistent part quality and cycle time.
Founded in 1961, REGLOPLAS AG is a Swiss family-owned company specialising in temperature control solutions for plastics, die-casting and other temperature-sensitive industries. The company has manufacturing and support operations in Europe, the US and Asia and a presence in over 50 countries through independent representatives. REGLOPLAS is represented in South Africa by Hestico, a leading supplier of injection moulding, plastic moulding and packaging equipment in Cape Town.
REGLOPLAS AG has taken a significant step forward with its eMold S Series. Featuring intelligent ΔT (delta T) control, this smart system improves energy efficiency in one of plastics processing’s most vital operations: mould temperature control.
In injection moulding, the quality of the final product is inextricably linked to how accurately and consistently heat is managed. Poor temperature control leads to part warping, shrinkage issues and high scrap rates. More advanced systems, on the other hand, offer stable processing windows, shorter cycle times and repeatable results.
The REGLOPLAS eMold S Series tackles these quality challenges while slashing energy usage. Traditionally, temperature control units are operated via pump pressure or flow rate. The eMold S Series introduces a third, smarter option – ΔT control, which uses the temperature difference between inlet and outlet flow to precisely manage heat without excess power usage.
This innovation allows for dynamic adjustments to cooling power based on real-time system feedback, eliminating the common inefficiencies of fixed-speed or overcompensating control systems.
Reducing downtime
Another breakthrough in the eMold S Series is the separation of the tempering medium and the cooling circuit. This clever redesign significantly reduces calcification inside the unit, which in turn cuts down on maintenance interventions and extends the overall service life of the system.
Energy savings are further enhanced by a variable speed cooling pump, which reduces power draw when full capacity isn’t needed, particularly useful during phases of low thermal demand. This makes it ideal for moulds with varied cooling requirements or intermittent operation, where conventional systems tend to overshoot.
Seamless control
A key advantage of the eMold S Series is its plug-and-play compatibility with all leading injection moulding machines. Thanks to its wide range of interfaces, it can be fully controlled and monitored via the injection moulding machine’s own system – no additional hardware or proprietary apps are required.
Further boosting its performance is its seamless integration with REGLOPLAS’s multiFlow manifold system. This setup allows individual flow channels to be independently managed, using either flow rate or ΔT as the control basis. The temperature control unit automatically adapts its pump speed to the total cooling demand, enhancing both precision and energy optimisation.
More than energy savings, the eMold S Series delivers smarter processing. Advanced software algorithms, developed specifically for injection moulding applications, ensure the system responds rapidly to thermal load changes and fluctuating production conditions.
The result is a powerful combination of flexibility, precision and sustainability that benefits processors across industries – from automotive to consumer goods, electronics to packaging.
Future-focused investment
According to Juanita Stiehler-Brits, managing director of Hestico, South African plastics processors face rising operational costs and increasing pressure to meet sustainability targets. ‘Technologies like REGLOPLAS’s eMold S Series offer a practical and measurable path forward,’ she says. ‘By optimising one of the most energy-intensive stages in the production cycle, this system helps converters improve productivity, reduce waste and shrink their energy footprint – all without compromising quality.’
