PICK N PAY has signed up as the second retail member of MetPac-SA, the producer responsibility organisation representing the metal packaging industry in South Africa.
‘By signing up as members and subscribing to the Industry Waste Management Plan, retailers are setting an example for their suppliers to follow. Their annual extended producer responsibility fee is also helping to invest in recycling and recovery operations of aluminium soft drink cans, canned food packaging made from aluminium and stainless steel, as well as aluminium foil products, aerosol canisters, metal caps and closures,’ explains MetPac-SA CEO, Kishan Singh.
Commenting on Pick n Pay’s motivation for joining MetPac-SA, sustainability general manager, André Nel, says: ‘These types of partnerships, which increase reuse and recycling, play an important part in driving longterm sustainable change by preventing more waste from reaching the environment.
‘We, therefore, believe it’s important to support organisations such as MetPac-SA, who are focused on establishing a circular economy by treating waste as a valuable resource that can be used to address a range of economic, social and environmental challenges,’ he states. ‘Pick n Pay has experienced the benefits of this approach first hand with reusable bags made from recycled plastic bottles.’
