In die cutting, pressure is unavoidable. The question is where it ends up. Every converter has experienced it: a high-quality cutting die enters the machine, yet makeready stretches on, cutting pressure climbs and operators deal with inconsistencies across the sheet. Often the cause is not the die itself but an imbalance of forces acting on it.
The CITO BALANCE PROFILE from CITO-SYSTEM GmbH is developed to distribute cutting forces more evenly across the die, reducing die tilt, lowering cutting pressure and improving cutting consistency. The solution aims to convert makeready, one of the most frustrating parts of die cutting, into productive machine time.
‘Converters want predictable performance,’ says Michael Schuster, head of sales at CITO. ‘A balanced cutting die allows the machine to run more efficiently while delivering consistent results from the first sheet to the last.’
For many carton and corrugated converters, makeready is a hidden cost. Operators frequently compensate for pressure differences by adjusting packing, altering settings or making repeated interventions to achieve an acceptable cut. While these adjustments solve the problem, they consume production time.
CITO BALANCE PROFILE addresses the issue at its source. The profile is applied directly to the cutting die, distributing forces precisely and preventing the die from tilting during operation. This produces more uniform pressure distribution across the entire sheet and reduces stress on both the die and the machine.
A comparison supplied by CITO shows a reduction in cutting pressure from 247 tons to 169 tons when the CITO BALANCE PROFILE is applied. It highlights the significant optimisation potential that can be achieved using existing makeready, without the need for die modifications.
Reducing nearly 80 tons of cutting pressure is not only an engineering statistic. Lower pressure translates into less mechanical stress, reduced wear on tooling and greater stability during production.
Where the rubber meets the rule
It also extends die life. Because the cutting rules are subjected to lower and more evenly distributed loads, wear is reduced and replacement intervals can be extended, providing a tangible financial benefit.
The technology becomes particularly relevant as packaging designs grow more complex. Modern folding cartons feature intricate cut-outs, narrow bridges, embossing elements and mixed rule heights that can create uneven force distribution across the die.
‘Today’s packaging designs place greater demands on tooling and machine performance,’ says Michael. ‘Our objective was to create a solution that delivers stability without adding complexity for the operator.’
Material selection also played a key role during development. According to CITO, the material properties are engineered to match the requirements of the die cutting process. The profiles are colour-coded, ISEGA-certified and designed for repeatable application.
Easy install, faster output
Installation is another important aspect. The CITO BALANCE PROFILE incorporates CITO’s EasyFix adhesive technology, allowing the profile to be positioned accurately on the die and removed without leaving residue. The process eliminates the need for activator sprays or super glues, simplifying application and improving safety in the die shop.
A key aspect of the system is that it does not require converters to invest in new equipment or redesign existing dies. CITO demonstrates that improvements can be achieved on repeat jobs using existing tooling.
