Packaging performance is often only noticed when something fails: a batch code becomes unreadable, a label won’t dispense at speed, a compliance update arrives late or a pack change disrupts throughput. What begins as a small print or labelling issue escalates into downtime, waste, traceability risk and rising operational cost.
As Pyrotec marks 60 years in 2026, its evolution reflects how packaging production has changed. Started in self-adhesive labelling, it has developed into a multidivisional business spanning label printing, coding and marking, software integration, engineered line solutions and packaging finance, all increasingly tied to production efficiency and line reliability.
Pyrotec’s roots trace back to 1966, following Joseph Beattie’s acquisition of Label Processes in 1964. At the time, the company supplied self-adhesive roll-label materials, hot-stamping foil and label printing equipment to a market that barely understood the technology.
Managing director Rowan Beattie joined the business in 1967 and worked across most production processes during those early years. That practical exposure shaped a philosophy still visible today: stay close to factory-floor realities, invest where it improves performance and prioritise long-term customer support.
‘There was limited demand for roll materials or the equipment used to print and die cut labels in those days,’ Rowan recalls. ‘Growth required innovation and a willingness to build the market, not just serve it.’
One of the company’s defining milestones came in 1980 when it became the sole sub-Saharan African licensee producing Fix-a-Form booklet labels. In markets where packaging must carry multiple languages, dosage instructions, legal information and traceability requirements, booklet labels provided a way to increase information capacity without redesigning the pack itself.
Pack information evolution
Today, as well as branding, packaging increasingly functions as a compliance, authentication and communication platform. Pyrotec PackMedia focuses on premium, informational and promotional label solutions, including multi-page leaflet and booklet labels that combine folded leaflets with self-adhesive constructions.
‘For manufacturers, the value is practical,’ explains Timothy Beattie, Pyrotec PackMedia’s general manager. ‘It allows more compliant packs, fewer branding compromises and label solutions that can adapt to changing content requirements and SKU complexity.’ The division also supports anti-counterfeiting and brand-protection applications through secure constructions, authentication features, unique identifiers and track-and-trace readiness.
Supporting this is Pyrotec PackPrint, which provides in-house litho printing and finishing for packaging-related printed components. The focus is on improving production control around colour consistency, turnaround time and compliance-critical printed material.
Production at pace
Pyrotec PackMark supplies coding, marking and labelling equipment, including print-and-apply systems, software and consumables, backed by technical support aimed at protecting uptime.
‘The PackMark portfolio reflects what production lines actually require,’ says Brandon Pearce, Pyrotec PackMark’s general manager. ‘Primary, secondary and tertiary coding and labelling technologies supported by technical responsiveness and operational reliability.’

The integration of PackLink and PackWorx into the PackMark structure has expanded Pyrotec’s role beyond equipment supply. Increasingly, the company positions itself as a turnkey integration partner capable of designing and managing complete line solutions from primary packaging through to end-of-line and dispatch. The focus is on operational improvement: reduced waste, improved throughput and stronger overall equipment efficiency (OEE).
Pyrotec PackMark also oversees complete installations, coordinating suppliers, engineering disciplines, commissioning and line integration to reduce disruption during implementation.
As manufacturing environments become more data-driven, Pyrotec PackLink adds software integration aimed at improving process visibility and operational accountability. Capabilities span serialisation, aggregation, RFID integration and warehouse applications.
‘The discussion around coding and labelling has shifted,’ explains Pyrotec PackLink Projects’ general manager Shaun Pillay. ‘It’s no longer only about print quality. Manufacturers increasingly measure performance through visibility, traceability, downtime reduction and line intelligence.’
Pyrotec PackWorx supports this with engineered equipment including conveyors, feeders and checkweighers designed for automated turnkey systems. ‘This capability often determines whether equipment integrates properly into an existing production environment,’ Brandon adds. ‘Stable handling, consistent performance at speed and practical line integration ultimately determine reliability.’
The group’s finance division complements this by allowing customers to acquire production equipment while protecting cash flow. ‘We ensure customers can invest in essential equipment while keeping production moving,’ says Flip van Schalkwyk, Pyrotec’s financial manager.
National footprint, regional reach
Pyrotec is privately owned and South African, with headquarters in Capricorn Park near Cape Town and operations in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape. The company also maintains distributor and representation networks across several African markets including Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique, Kenya and Tanzania.
For Rowan, geography remains significant operationally. ‘Packaging, printing and coding failures don’t wait for convenient schedules,’ he says. ‘Service response and technical support often determine whether an issue becomes a minor interruption or a costly production problem.’
Recent investment has focused on speed, inspection capability, automation and production resilience. In 2018, Pyrotec expanded its digital label capability through the installation of the Durst Tau 330 RSC and ABG Digicon Series 3 to support faster turnaround times and multivariant label production. In 2020, PackLink strengthened software integration capability aimed at improving line efficiency and identifying defects earlier in production workflows.
Pyrotec PackPrint’s litho division expanded in 2023 with the addition of the HEIDELBERG CX-102 featuring inline coating and aqueous varnishing, supported by in-house plate imaging and finishing systems. The capability supports booklet labels, inserts, neck tags, folding cartons and wet-glue labels. In 2024, a second ABG F-510 was installed to strengthen pharmaceutical inspection capability through high-resolution camera verification of every label roll.
Energy resilience also became a priority in 2025 through the installation of 773 solar panels and three 100kW inverters at the label factory.
Expansion plans continue, including carton converting capability and a new carton folder-gluer, while further label press investment is being evaluated. ‘We invest where it delivers the biggest operational impact: speed, repeatability and confidence that every item leaving the line is correct,’ Timothy notes.
Reliability built into process
For Pyrotec, reliability is treated as a manufacturing discipline. ‘Reliability is built deliberately. It comes through technical discipline, accountable service and consistent operational standards,’ Rowan says. Operationally, this is reinforced through ISO 9001:2015 systems, GMP training, internal ISO auditor programmes, daily uptime and downtime monitoring, as well as continuous-improvement practices including 5S implementation.
The company also cites SMETA and SEDEX compliance, EPR compliance through Fibre Circle, FSC-ready systems where required and Level 3 B-BBEE status.
Today, Pyrotec’s six specialist divisions – PackMedia, PackMark, PackLink, PackWorx, PackPrint and Finance – collectively support manufacturers across packaging communication, coding and labelling, engineered integration, factory visibility and equipment funding.
Six decades on, the company’s positioning remains closely tied to the factory floor: reducing waste, protecting uptime, improving OEE and helping packaging systems perform reliably under rising production pressure.
Reading between the lines
Coding now functions as a control point on high-speed beverage lines, where traceability, uptime and compliance either hold or unravel.
In beverage packaging, that pressure is constant. Lines run fast, environments are unstable and substrates change from glass and cans to shrink sleeves and cartons. Condensation, abrasion and handling do more than just test print quality, they exposes weak processes.
For Brandon Pearce, general manager at Pyrotec PackMark, the problem isn’t selecting a coding technology, but building reliability into the line. ‘The goal isn’t just to add a date coder,’ he says. ‘It’s to build a product identification and traceability flow that remains reliable from primary packaging through to cases and pallets.’
That’s where most losses begin, not in outright failure, but in inconsistency with start-up waste, slow approvals and unstable runs. At speed, small issues compound quickly. ‘If your setup isn’t right, you’re already on the back foot,’ Brandon notes. Stability, including web handling, tension, register and application accuracy, determines whether a line runs clean or carries waste through the system.
Upstream issues add to the problem. Late artwork changes, unclear approvals and mismatched specifications all land on press. By the time the code is applied, the problem is already embedded.
Pyrotec takes a different approach. Coding is positioned as part of a controlled system rather than a standalone function. ‘Traceability starts with consistency at line level. If coding, labelling and verification aren’t integrated into a single controlled process, you introduce risk,’ explains Lazelle Coetzee, marketing manager at Pyrotec.
At high speeds, that control must be automated. Manual checks fall away. What replaces them is verification – systems that confirm in real time that the right code is applied to the right product. ‘If it’s not verified, it’s a risk,’ Lazelle says.
The role of the code is also expanding. Variable data now extends beyond batch and expiry. QR codes, serialisation and unique identifiers link packs to digital systems for traceability, authentication and, increasingly, consumer interaction. The pack acts as a data carrier.
However, that only works if the mark survives the journey. Beverage environments are unforgiving, and durability becomes application-specific. Ink, ribbon or laser selection is less about preference and more about conditions on the line and in transit. ‘A code that fails in transit is a failure in traceability,’ Lazelle says.
