Epson responds to SKU growth

The label market is becoming more complex as brands launch more SKUs, product variants and promotional campaigns. This is placing greater pressure on converters to handle shorter runs. Epson believes its newly launched SurePress digital label press can help meet that challenge.

For years, digital label printing has been an established part of the packaging landscape in Europe, North America and Asia. In Africa, however, adoption has been slower, with most label production still rooted in conventional flexographic processes that are efficient for long runs and repeat work.

Market requirements are changing. Brand owners are launching more product variants. Retailers are expanding private-label ranges. Regulations are becoming more complex, while promotional campaigns and seasonal packaging updates place greater pressure on converters to deliver flexibility without compromising quality or turnaround times.

Against this backdrop, Epson has introduced Africa’s first SurePress digital label press in South Africa, bringing the technology to the regional market.

Following installation in April and final testing in May, the press is now operational through Epson’s local partner, Altron Document Solutions, which oversees implementation and customer support in the region.

According to Gareth Jay, regional sales director for Africa at Epson, the launch reflects changing customer requirements. ‘There is a marked increase in demand for short-run and personalised output across the print sector, and label production is no exception,’ says Gareth. ‘SurePress enables customers to respond to that demand with greater flexibility, consistency and control, while maintaining print quality across a wider range of substrates.’

The opportunity extends beyond producing smaller quantities as product ranges become more fragmented. A single product range may require multiple label variations to accommodate different pack sizes, export destinations, regulatory requirements, languages or promotional campaigns. For converters, this means managing a growing number of jobs, many of which no longer justify traditional production volumes.

Digital printing offers an alternative approach. By reducing setup requirements associated with conventional processes, converters can move between jobs more efficiently while producing only the quantities required. This reduces the risk of obsolete inventory and allows brands to respond more quickly to market changes.

‘Crucially, it delivers commercial viability for short runs, allowing local businesses to break away from massive volume requirements that increase upfront costs and limit operational flexibility,’ says Gareth. ‘Providers can now produce high-quality labels locally, matching demand as it happens.’

For Altron Document Solutions, the platform creates opportunities for both established converters and businesses looking to diversify into label production. ‘Our partnership with Epson allows us to bring proven technology into the market, backed by our 60-year local legacy and a shared commitment to reliability,’ says Keith Knott, head of production systems.

‘The value lies in translating reliability into commercial flexibility, allowing local print providers to profitably run jobs as small as 500 labels without the burden of high volume minimums.’

The SurePress platform incorporates features designed for demanding label applications, including water-based inks for greater substrate versatility, improved drying performance on film materials, an expanded colour gamut and automated maintenance functions to improve productivity and consistency.

The launch also forms part of Epson’s ongoing investment in South Africa. The company recently opened its Johannesburg Innovation Centre, providing customers and partners with access to industrial and commercial printing technologies, training resources and application development support.

While digital label printing will not replace conventional flexography, its role within converter operations is expected to expand as product portfolios become more diverse and lead times shorten.

Sustainability is also an important consideration. Producing labels closer to demand can help reduce overproduction, minimise waste and limit obsolete stock entering the supply chain. Epson says the SurePress platform was developed according to its Sho-Sho-Sei philosophy, focusing on efficient, compact and precise product design.
