| Festive issue 2011 | | And now we are five . . .Five years after this magazine’s inception, Gill Loubser tracks its fortunes, admittedly from a rather subjective point of view!
When I started writing this piece, I pondered a way in which to avoid sounding self-congratulatory … but then I thought: What the heck! We’re entitled to be proud of our achievements; this is no time for false modesty; let’s tell it like it is.
In 2006, with a hand-picked team of five, we established this magazine, pretty much on a shoestring. Now five years on, the team has swelled to ten (equally carefully selected) and our financial status is immeasurably stronger!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. That’s the way I kicked off the first issue of the brand-new title, PACKAGiNG & Print Media. But those words could never convey the depth of Susi’s and my gratitude to our many industry friends – those who showed faith in our new venture, not only giving moral support (especially during some time- and money-wasting litigation!), but also signing advertising orders, submitting editorial, sharing customer mailing lists, and so much more.

| Festive issue 2011 | | Beware the foreign invasionThere’s an alarming number of imported cosmetic and beauty products in South Africa, says Andrea Protti, marketing director of RAP International, and it’s high-time FMCG marketers and packaging suppliers pulled up their socks to challenge these alien invaders. When I scan the shelves of our esteemed retail giants, it occurs to me that there’s an overwhelming influx of imported beauty and personal care products in South Africa, mainly from European and Asian markets. These wily invaders are boldly seizing our shelf space thanks to a positive rate of exchange and an obviously inadequate South African import duty, and we’re letting them get away with it.
